“Mask”

She is smiling.

After all has been trampled past,
the sound of a woman’s back collapsing.

Oh, embers drifting on a dried-up river—

Joy that seeped inward
crumbles into white dust,
and here, in the night that remains,
you must still be smiling.

You do not know your own face.
