Facebook vs. Faith Book (Devotional Essay #307)

By WanHee Yoon (8.8.2012)

It has been only a little over ten years since Facebook was introduced to the world, yet reports say that more than 800 million people now use it. A few years ago, when I first heard that my children were using Facebook to chat with their friends, it sounded strange and unfamiliar to me. Then one day I learned that through Facebook I could see my granddaughters’ faces more often, even though they lived far away. That gave me the courage to sign up.

At first, during the first few months, everything felt awkward and I didn’t use it often. But as time passed, I found myself being drawn more and more into its power. These days, it has become part of my daily life. I check it several times a day to see updates from my Facebook friends and to get news about my granddaughters living in New York. With just a touch of my fingers, I can instantly share our love, joy, and happiness with them.

Now, Facebook connects us with family and friends across New York, Tennessee, Italy, Singapore, Korea, Japan, and beyond — as though the whole world meets together in one cyber space. Sometimes, the sense of distance even disappears. There are moments when my husband and I, sitting together in our living room, each on our own computers, end up chatting with each other on Facebook — something so amusing we cannot help but laugh.

Among the many friends I enjoy following on Facebook, one of my favorites is Flower Story. Scattered across the globe, they post rare flowers and ordinary blossoms magnified through a microscope lens, revealing breathtaking beauty, wonder, and even a sense of fragrance that touches the soul.

Since joining Facebook, I have come to realize one of the greatest miracles of all: that we have the Faith Book, the Bible, always by our side. Long before Facebook ever existed, our Creator had already started His “Faith Book,” gathering all humanity within the Scriptures, transcending time and space, and connecting it to my life today.

When life feels unfair, or when my heart grows heavy and troubled, I sometimes turn to my Facebook friends. They meet me, listen, comfort me, and share generously the wisdom they have gained through fiery trials and suffering.

Once, I stood before a mountain-sized problem, like facing my own Goliath — something I could never overcome by my own strength. That day, I went to find one of my Faith Book friends, young David. Without a word, he placed five smooth stones into my hand. Ah! The moment I held those stones, I felt the presence of the mighty One standing behind me. And in that instant, I knew that the mountain before me had already vanished into nothing.

Even today, I remain connected to the vast world through Facebook. But I know that all those friends and all that world will one day vanish from my fingertips, bound by the limits of a single lifetime.

Yet the very fact that I can hold the Faith Book today is an unimaginable blessing. How proud and thankful I am to be connected to the Lord, who, through the Faith Book, grants me victory, joy, and eternal life!

My weary friends, do you know that even now, within the Faith Book, there is One eagerly waiting for your sign?
