As we stand on the threshold of the 21st century, corporations and nations alike are naming the construction of an ultra‑high‑speed information network as their most urgent investment priority. Scientists are pouring their energy into rapid technological development.
Just as ultra‑high‑speed information is called “the rice of the 21st century,” it is expected to become the greatest social infrastructure of the coming era. The ripple effects of such a network will profoundly influence human culture. Once this network is established, countless services—education, civil services, medical care, cultural life, corporate information processing, shopping, banking—will be easily handled from home through optical fiber. Three‑dimensional video conferencing will be possible anywhere in the world, and multimedia computers and video phones will become commonplace. Falling behind in information technology will bring significant losses to a nation’s economy, which is why the world is watching this development closely.
The advancement of scientific and technological civilization is, of course, welcome news. Through human ingenuity, diseases have been eradicated, and better living conditions have been created, offering an improved environment compared to the past. These are achievements worthy of celebration. Yet we must remember that, with this progress, there are also things we are losing. A representative example is the introduction of the first black‑and‑white television. People were completely overwhelmed by this new technology. Its impact on families, society, culture, the economy, and even international relations was enormous, and it is no exaggeration to say that it played a major role in ushering humanity into an age of commercialism.
Because of the flood of advertisements on television, children began singing commercial jingles—“Buy this for me”—instead of traditional children’s songs and poems. Rather than cherishing our own culture, we became captivated by Western culture, abandoning our individuality. The clothing and styles of Western entertainers have become the standard for young people around the world. In the past, heroes were those who were honest, courageous, and willing to give their lives for loyalty. Today, however, anyone who possesses wealth and fame—even those involved in scandals and extravagant lifestyles—seems to be mistaken for a hero.
One pastor lamented that modern believers are drowning in videos and television, saying, “If you fall asleep after watching merciless, horrifying movies and filthy X‑rated films that confuse your soul, what will you do if your soul does not awaken the next morning?” There is a vast difference between ending the day by reflecting, repenting, reading even a single verse of Scripture, and meditating before sleep—and collapsing in exhaustion before a television filled with violence, murder, destruction, and chaotic entertainment.
Of course, television has not brought only negative influences. It has broadened our perspective and knowledge, helped us see people on the other side of the globe as neighbors, and enabled us to understand their cultures and customs. It has also given us easy access to excellent operas, musical performances, and masterpieces of art. Yet, without our awareness, television has also drawn us into a consumer culture and led us toward violence and materialism. In front of the TV that shapes such values, the challenge for believers is how to restore human relationships that are losing their meaning.
We all desire to live in heaven. To obtain a life as comfortable as heaven, technological civilization continues to advance. It is true that our quality of life has improved to some extent, but our inner life has become increasingly cluttered. Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). Yet the more technology advances, the less peace our spirits seem to enjoy.
When the age of ultra‑high‑speed information networks fully arrives, our physical lives will become even busier with the flood of information, ideas, and endless choices about new worlds. I worry that, unless we are careful, believers may repeat the indiscriminate mistakes of the past. We must not allow ourselves—or our descendants—to become so captivated or absorbed by the technological civilization developed through the creative abilities God has given us that we forget the Creator Himself. Even if our physical lives become more convenient and advanced than before, we must not lose our “spirit.” The Lord has already opened to us an eternal life incomparable to any technological achievement, and we reach that eternal life through the discipline of godliness. The discipline of godliness is the work of guarding our soul, body, and mind through prayer, meditation, and the Word.
As we look ahead to the 21st century and the imminent arrival of the ultra‑high‑speed information age, I hope that this new era will not be one in which we lose more than we gain. Rather, may it be a time when we come to understand more deeply the infinite nature of our Creator God, grow in the knowledge of Him, and become true worshipers—true people of faith—of the 21st century.
Have you ever tried counting the stars scattered across the night sky? When I was a child, I often rode on my father’s back out to the front yard and tried to count them. “One star, one me… two stars, two me… three stars, three me…” No matter how long I counted—until my neck ached and my mouth went dry—the stars never ended. I remember burrowing deeper into my father’s back, overwhelmed by that endless multitude.
The relationship between stars and human beings is truly beautiful. Under starlight, people often find themselves becoming gentler. From that light, we sometimes draw hope, sometimes comfort, and in sorrow we shed tears that seem to fall in harmony with the stars. When our hearts grow clouded, the stars can offer a silent but piercing rebuke. I often see stars in the early dawn sky, and whenever I look at those jewel‑like clusters scattered across the heavens, I feel something in my soul resonate with them.
A few weeks ago, I had the chance to encounter these beautiful stars more closely. One evening during dinner, our family was discussing various articles from the latest issue of Time magazine. Among them were the first photographs in human history capturing the birth of stars—images taken by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. As I turned each page, the scenes of star‑birth filled my vision as though magnified before my eyes, and I felt myself being drawn into the infinite chambers of heaven.
There I was—this small, insignificant person—invited into a sacred and holy realm where light must travel seven thousand years from Earth to arrive. From towering columns of gas—six trillion miles high—newborn stars burst forth like flames, each one emerging in orderly coexistence, large and small. Even there, God’s hand governed without the slightest error or deviation—ordering, beautifying, and sustaining the mysteries of the cosmos. As I gazed at the tender faces of stars born from the “pillars of creation,” and the planets spinning in their orbits, a reverent awe washed over me: “How great our God must be!”
“When I know what I truly am, I become humble, and I learn to live in true love… Ah—ah—my tiny, dust‑like existence in this vast universe…!” I stood speechless before the photographs, unable to move.
In the scale of this cosmos, our lives—long if a hundred years, short if fifty—pass in the blink of an eye. Seeing this, I felt the supports I had leaned on in this world crumble within me. “To think that the great God has come to this nothing‑of‑a‑being, to show me His love—and that He walks with me moment by moment!” The realization struck me with overwhelming force, rising like a wave from the depths of my heart.
“Where can such love be found? What is the true work of this dust‑like being in the fleeting time given to me?” Holding the photographs of the stars, I felt like a wandering soul at the edge of the Milky Way, grieving over the sinful human hours lost in war, hatred, and the strange currents of this world. “Such a great and good God is with us… Lord, please keep me from wasting even a single moment of the precious time You have given!” Suddenly, uncontrollable sobs burst from me. My startled children and my husband tried to comfort me, but the storm of emotion would not subside.
Later I learned that my eldest child had experienced the same awakening. With the realization—“I am nothing”—he went down to the basement, knelt before God, and offered himself in prayer. “Mom, I think I finally understand, even just a little, what humility is.” His eyes shone brighter than ever before.
“Human beings live not by the body but by the soul.” Tolstoy’s confession of faith gives us the key to cross the universe and touch the heart of God. The moment we cry, “Father God, I love You,” the infinite God crosses the vast heavens and comes into us.
Long ago, looking at the sky and looking at the stars, my beloved father cultivated his spirit under their light. Today, the stars he loved seem to pour down upon my own soul in a shower of wonder I cannot hold back.
Some days, after spending the day busily, we end the evening with a sense of satisfaction, thinking, “Ah! Today was full and meaningful!” But there are just as many days when we wonder, “What did I even do today?”
When I gather up those days that felt meaningful and ask myself what exactly brought me such joy and fulfillment, I examine their true significance. Yet even among those days, how many would God look upon with pleasure and say, “Well done”? When I think about that, I am left uncertain once again.
Each person pursues different values and shapes of life in a single day. But goals without peace, success isolated from neighbors, income earned as a slave to money, achievements built at the cost of body and soul—how much meaning do these truly hold? I must ask myself again. A single moment of misjudging what is valuable can ruin not only one’s own life but leave lifelong wounds on one’s children and neighbors. We see such stories all around us.
A pastor I respect once told me about his maternal grandfather, who lived in Hwanghae Province during the Korean War. As the family fled south, the grandfather suddenly said he needed to return home to retrieve something important and took his eldest son with him. The boat was about to depart, but they never returned. His grandmother and mother were swept away in the tide of refugees, and for over forty years they lived separated—his grandmother dying with longing for her husband and son.
Another man confessed from his sickbed that he had worked tirelessly to live better than others. While others slept, he worked. But before he knew it, illness overtook him, and just when life seemed comfortable, he found himself facing death. He had worked so hard that he never had time to take his children to the park. He never once took a carefree vacation by the beautiful seaside. “Who will feed my family if I rest?” he would say. “If I leave the house, I have to buy food, pay for gas, pay for everything. But if I stay home, I save money.” He refused every invitation to church. “I work all week. I need at least one day to lie on the sofa with a cold drink and rest so I can survive another week.” He would not allow his wife or children to look at anything beyond work. Even visits from poor relatives felt burdensome. Friends drifted away.
Eventually he saved enough to buy the mansion he had dreamed of. But by then, the children had already left for college. In the scorching summer, he couldn’t bring himself to turn on the air conditioner. In the freezing winter, he wore a parka indoors and shivered, dreaming of summer. He never drove his shiny car freely for fear of dulling its polish. The expensive Italian furniture and the French china sparkled in the house, but he hardly dared touch them.
When business finally eased, he and his wife decided to enjoy the leisure they had missed. For the first time, they went out to a sunny field to play golf. But suddenly, under the bright sun, he suffered a stroke. His mouth and limbs were paralyzed. He could no longer go where he wanted, eat what he wanted, or enjoy anything at all.
Lying in his hospital bed, he looked back on his life. He realized that everything he had desperately tried to grasp had been nothing but wind. In that wind, his true dreams, his youth, his children, his friends, his relatives—everything had vanished. What remained? A large, empty mansion. Expensive Italian furniture. French china. A luxury car in the garage. And the worn, weary face of the wife who had stayed with him all his life.
Seeing the shadow of darkness reaching toward him from behind the wind, he grew afraid. He confessed that he had finally begun to understand—however faintly—that there are things in this world “more precious than earning a living.” But the realization came too late. He had no time left to seek what was not wind. A year later, he passed away—into the wind.
How can we know whether what we are pursuing today is truly meaningful or merely wind? One thing is certain: If we do not live centered on God and in love with our neighbors, our lives will end in the futility of chasing the wind.
If we spend our whole lives grasping at wind, and at the final moment—when we must settle accounts with God—we find nothing in our hands, how shocked and regretful we will be. No matter how beautiful the Italian furniture or the luxurious French dinnerware, none of it can enter God’s storehouse. They are only wood and clay.
Working hard is important. But without discernment in God, a lifetime becomes nothing more than chasing the wind.
A few years ago, our whole family took a trip to Canada. Since it was our first family trip, everyone thought we should prepare thoroughly so we wouldn’t experience any inconvenience. Each family member packed as much as they could. We filled the car’s trunk and every inch of space under the seats, and even that wasn’t enough—so we tied three suitcases onto the roof of our small four‑cylinder car with thick ropes and set out.
But the trouble began at the very first rest area on the way to our destination. Whenever we stopped to use the restroom or look around, someone had to stay behind to guard the luggage strapped to the roof. Only then did we realize that our baggage was preventing the five of us from moving freely together. Yet each person insisted that this item or that item was necessary, and everything felt too precious to discard. After much deliberation, we finally decided that as soon as we crossed the Canadian border, we would sort through the luggage, go to the post office, and mail it home. Crossing the border meant paying expensive postage, but once we sent the luggage away, the lightness and freedom we felt allowed us to taste the true joy of traveling. Even now, whenever we remember how cramped we were in that little car, unable to stretch our legs because of all the baggage, we burst into laughter. Through that experience, our whole family learned how wise it is to travel lightly.
As we welcome the New Year, we set out once again on a new road in history. Though there are so many people in this world, no one knows what kind of path lies open before us. No one knows whether a field of stones awaits us, or a cliff, or an unpaved muddy road, or whether the smooth highway we have been traveling will continue. We pack our bags full, hoping for safety, health, and blessings throughout the year. Before setting out, I unpacked my bundle once more, drawing from past experience, and examined what was truly necessary. From that, I selected just three things I cannot do without this year.
The first is “gratitude.” This year, I want to break the habit of giving thanks only when something lacking is supplied or something missing is filled. I want to give thanks for what I already have—my health, my present circumstances, my husband and children who trust and love me, my relatives and church members, my homeland, the small garden and study in the parsonage that bring me joy, and the congregation who prays for me. All of these are reasons for gratitude. As long as God allows, I want to express gratitude freely in thought and in word.
The second is “love.” In the past, I was often hurt by difficulties in relationships, but that was because my love for others was not generous enough. My habit of judging and criticizing others came from a lack of love—a failure to embrace, not realizing that such a path is the dividing line between life and death (1 John 3:14). This year, I truly want to choose only the path of life at that crossroads.
The third is “faith.” With the compass of Hebrews 11:1—“Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”—I want to set out with complete trust and reliance on God. I want to travel with a faith that does not waste time wandering in the shadows of empty illusions. I do not want to pray cowardly prayers asking God to remove every obstacle before me. As in years past, invisible walls and Red Seas may suddenly rise before us, blocking our personal and national hopes and goals. Yet how great is the assurance that with faith, we can endure all these obstacles.
A journey must be simple and free if one is to enjoy it fully. We pack many things thinking we might need them, but in truth, only a few things are truly necessary. Have we perhaps lost the true purpose of the journey by trying to satisfy too many physical needs? This year, I pray that as my spirit, soul, and body seek balance, I will not care only for the body and lose my spirit and soul.
This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of our nation’s liberation—a Jubilee year. It is a year of joy and freedom, when slaves are released, debts forgiven, and land returned to its original stewards. As we set out toward this celebration of joy and national liberation, I carry with me gratitude, love, and faith. As I begin the new path the Lord has granted, I pray that my bundles will not in any way hinder His plans.
